The beginner course in the Program, Essentials covered virtually every topic in business and exposed me to a lot of fundamental concepts. From the business lifecycle to key performance indicators, Mrs. Stadtlander taught me the building blocks of every company and the intricacies of planning, operations and management, all of which I explored further as the program progressed.
A key idea addressed in this course is the influence of individual pioneers on the business world. As part of our discussion about the human aspect of business and the various contributions to the industry from notable executives and managers, we were tasked with researching two notable figures and discussing their legacies on the industry.
For my presentations, I picked William Hewlett and David Packard of the globally-recognized HP corporation as an example of a positive legacy, and Jordan Belfort, infamous for fraud and financial manipulation, as a negative example.
Feel free to explore my findings through the attached slideshows.
Additionally, we were asked to interview a business executive/industry insider. For my interview, I selected Adrian Walchli, co-founder and President of Marinsa International, a global supplier and servicer of Marine engines and equipment. Click here to read my interview reflection.
Instead of a typical semester exam, the Essentials class had us select a company which we would then research in-depth and prepare a "Company Profile" presentation, applying the topics learned in class to a real-world example.
I selected an up-and-coming electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian, mainly because I was captivated by their product and interested in their history as a company. It proved to be a challenging company to research as it only recently held its IPO and had very little objective information available online, but it made for a very thorough and engaging project that I presented in front of my classmates and an industry judge.
The work for this project was divided into deliverables, which you can take a look at to the left (or below if you are on mobile). These are purely information-centered worksheets with all the raw information that I eventually put together into this beautiful final pitch deck.
